“U.S. Ambassador Condemns Settler Siege in West Bank”

U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, strongly denounced the siege carried out by Israeli settlers on a Palestinian American family’s residence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, labeling it as a “shocking act of terror.” The settlers have been causing distress to the family in the village of Qusra since Sunday, despite attempts by the Israeli military to resolve the situation. A group of settlers, numbering up to dozens of individuals, have engaged in stone-throwing, attempted to damage a nearby stone wall, and blocked the occupants from leaving, leading to a shortage of essential supplies.

Qusai Abu Rida, who was sheltering in the house with his teenage son, reported that they were relocated to another home by the Israeli military but are still confined to the area. While the Israeli military did not confirm the relocation, the homeowner, Loui Ridi, revealed that the settlers had targeted their residence for months before the recent escalation.

A spate of violence has gripped the region, prompting Huckabee to call for action against the perpetrators, whom he referred to as “Israeli terrorists.” He emphasized the need to combat the intimidation and harassment inflicted on the family by these individuals. Qusra Mayor Abed Al Athem Wadi disclosed that Israeli soldiers had evacuated six homes in the village, including three homes on besieged hilltops.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) condemned the actions aimed at displacing residents from their homes and land. The Canadian government and various human rights organizations have criticized the expansion of settlements in the West Bank as a violation of international law. Israeli forces have intervened to restore order, dismantling illegal outposts on the outskirts of Qusra and detaining one Israeli individual.

In the midst of escalating tensions, both Palestinians and the Israeli opposition have accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration of disregarding settler attacks. Despite the Israeli military declaring the area a closed military zone, settlers returned to obstruct roads with rocks, defying the authorities’ directives. The ongoing conflict underscores the deep-rooted tensions in the region, with settlers advocating for continued expansion and Palestinians seeking the establishment of a sovereign state in the West Bank.
