Two young brothers, aged one and two, tragically drowned in a First Nation community in the Island Lake area of eastern Manitoba on Wednesday, according to the RCMP.
The police were informed about the incident when the children were brought to the nursing station of Garden Hill Anisininew Nation around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, as per an RCMP news release on Thursday.
A family member discovered the toddlers in the lake and the First Nation safety officers promptly transported them to the nursing station, where they were pronounced dead.
Authorities believe the boys wandered away from their residence and ended up in the nearby lake, with no suspicion of foul play.
Expressing condolences, Alex McDougall, the grand chief of Anisininew Okimawin representing the four First Nations in the Island Lake region, mentioned the community’s support for the grieving family.
Despite efforts to prevent such incidents, including the construction of a protective barrier around the water, the community remains in shock and sorrow.
Garden Hill, located approximately 475 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg, is now mourning the loss of the young siblings.

Sgt. Chris Hipolito of the Island Lake RCMP mentioned a previous drowning during the spring ice breakup and a few near misses, emphasizing the difficult nature of such tragedies.
Offering support to the affected family, Hipolito acknowledged the challenging road ahead for the community in coping and processing this devastating loss.
