Martin Sellner, who has been barred from the UK and faced travel restrictions in the US and Germany, is scheduled to speak at an event organized by the Dominion Society on August 29. The Dominion Society advocates for “remigration,” a concept promoting the mass expulsion of immigrants.
Sellner’s entry ban in the UK was due to security concerns, as stated in a letter from the UK government citing his threat to their efforts against extremism. In 2019, his US travel permit was revoked after it was revealed that the Christchurch mosque shooter had donated money to him. The shooter was responsible for the tragic events in New Zealand, resulting in numerous casualties.
German authorities imposed a three-year entry ban on Sellner following nationalist gatherings that sparked significant protests. While Canadian officials have not disclosed whether Sellner will be allowed entry, they emphasized that all visitors must meet admissibility criteria outlined in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Reasons for inadmissibility to Canada include involvement in violence or terrorism, espionage, or affiliation with criminal organizations.
Sellner’s potential visit to Canada has raised concerns, with experts highlighting the rise of white nationalist ideologies in Hamilton. Ameil Joseph, an anti-racism scholar based in Hamilton, suggested that Canada should consider restricting Sellner’s entry given restrictions imposed by other countries. Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath has reached out to local venue owners, informing them of the Dominion Society’s beliefs to help them make informed decisions on bookings.
The Dominion Society, categorized as a nationalist group, promotes the “great replacement” conspiracy theory, claiming that white populations are being replaced by racialized individuals. The group advocates for the mass deportation of various groups, including temporary foreign workers and permanent residents. Daniel Tyrie, Chair of the Dominion Society, defended Sellner’s potential visit, labeling any restrictions as political persecution.
