Glenn Deir, a retired journalist residing in St. John’s, shares his experience of being reliant on six Boost meal replacement drinks daily for five months, post his throat surgery due to cancer. Despite the vanilla or strawberry flavored Boost and pureed food sustaining him, the unappetizing slurry of meat and vegetables led to a significant weight loss of 15 pounds. Failing swallow tests due to impaired throat functions kept him on a liquid diet, closely monitored by speech language pathologists.
While undergoing radiation treatment and chemotherapy at St. Clare’s Hospital, Deir had to forfeit a planned moose hunting trip due to health concerns. Dr. Brent Tompkins, his radiation oncologist, expressed his need for prolonged recovery and daily assistance in a letter to the wildlife department for license renewal. Amidst treatment sessions, Deir entertained thoughts of amusing scenarios involving his doctor and the postponed hunting expedition.
The rigorous treatment regimen included daily radiation sessions, where even the consumption of water posed risks. During chemotherapy, a minor mishap prompted a reassuring exchange with a nurse. Deir remained committed to prescribed exercises, hoping to regain normal swallowing function. By late November, after completing cancer treatment, improved swallowing capabilities enabled him to embark on intensive swallow therapy, marking a significant milestone in his journey towards consuming solid foods once again.
Transitioning from pudding cups to soft solid foods like bananas, mac and cheese, and apple pie, Deir’s culinary options expanded gradually. However, the aftermath of radiation treatment, which diminished his saliva production, necessitated constant water intake. Despite occasional coughing spells, Deir persevered through meals with small bites and meticulous chewing, supported by dedicated speech language pathologists.
As he continues to refine his swallowing technique, Deir remains optimistic about enjoying a variety of soft foods and eventually reintroducing steak on his menu. While acknowledging potential delays during meals, he embraces the progress made in his recovery journey and looks forward to savoring Christmas dinner with a newfound appreciation for each bite.
