My introduction to hockey came during the 2010 Winter Olympics, witnessing the unforgettable finale between Canada and the U.S., culminating in Sidney Crosby’s golden goal during an intense overtime.
Watching the game with friends on Vancouver Island, I saw the nation erupt in jubilation, with celebratory honking cars and renditions of O Canada echoing across the country.
Having recently relocated from the Philippines to Canada, I was astounded by how a hockey triumph could unify a nation so profoundly. It was a remarkable demonstration of collective spirit.
This experience sparked my interest in the sport. Amidst settling into my new home, hockey seemed to follow me, evident in people donning jerseys and exuberant cheers resonating through my apartment building during games. It prompted me to add “Learn about hockey” to my checklist of immigrant experiences in Canada.
My first live hockey game was in spring 2014, witnessing the Edmonton Oilers against the Anaheim Ducks. Attending with a passionate hockey enthusiast friend who held season tickets, the atmosphere was electrifying at Rexall Place in Edmonton.

Immersed in the sea of orange-clad fans chanting “Let’s gooo Oilers!” as the buzzer sounded, the energy was reminiscent of ships docking back in the Philippines. I was now part of the passionate crowd, witnessing the Oilers’ victory and the collective joy that ensued.
Subsequently, I discovered the immense impact of hockey in Edmonton. Colleagues sporting Oilers’ jerseys at work and the somber atmosphere following a loss highlighted the sport’s pervasive influence. Phrases like “Battle of Alberta” intrigued me, leading me to learn about the intense hockey rivalry between Edmonton and Calgary.
In Canada, I realized that hockey transcends mere sport; it’s deeply ingrained in the culture, almost akin to a religion. I encountered nods to hockey legends like Wayne Gretzky, further solidifying the sport’s revered status.
As I began avidly watching games on TV, my interest grew. Anticipating events like the Battle of Alberta, I adorned my kitchen with Oilers-themed towels, a memento of my evolving passion for hockey in sync with my integration into Canadian life.
My affection for hockey paralleled my assimilation into the country. Engaging in office discussions about the game fostered a sense of belonging and community.
