“Record Rainfall in Japan Causes Chaos at Narita Airport”

Record rainfall in Japan caused significant disruptions in Tokyo’s Narita airport, leaving thousands of travelers stranded. The excessive rainfall in Chiba prefecture, which borders Tokyo, led to floods, transportation disruptions, power outages affecting 20,000 homes, and tragically resulted in eight fatalities.

Chiba Governor Toshihito Kumagai described the situation as highly unusual, emphasizing that the severity of this event was unprecedented in his experience with disasters. Among the casualties was an individual trapped in a submerged vehicle, as reported by Chiba authorities and police.

At Narita airport, stranded passengers received assistance with sleeping bags, water, and snacks after being stuck due to transportation issues that left around 7,000 people stranded, causing chaos. Some passengers, like Minoru Yamasaki, faced long waits for taxis and had to return to the airport after their hotel accommodations fell through.

Despite the challenges, airport officials anticipated that most flights would resume normal operations on Friday. Meanwhile, over 20,000 homes lost power due to flooding at a power substation, with gas supply interruptions affecting nearly 13,000 residents. In Chiba city, where the impact was severe, hundreds sought shelter in government buildings.

Road closures and power outages persisted, with major highways in Chiba closed, leading to traffic congestion as drivers navigated alternative routes. Additionally, some rail services were suspended, although there were efforts to restore connectivity between Narita and Tokyo to alleviate travel disruptions.

Meteorological authorities confirmed that the 24-hour rainfall in Chiba exceeded previous records, reaching 367 millimeters, surpassing the previous high of 309 millimeters in October 2013. The images of flooded areas and stranded residents paint a vivid picture of the challenges faced by the affected communities.
