“Man in Kentner Manslaughter Case Granted Full Parole”

The Parole Board of Canada has granted full parole with conditions to Brayden Bushby, the man convicted of manslaughter in the 2017 death of Barbara Kentner in Thunder Bay, Ont. Bushby, who was sentenced to eight years in prison five years ago, has been released back into society. The decision was based on various factors, including victim information, Correctional Service of Canada’s recommendation, and a panel hearing presentation.

Barbara Kentner, a 34-year-old member of Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation, passed away due to medical complications after being struck by a trailer hitch thrown at her from a moving vehicle. Kentner is fondly remembered by her family as a beloved mother, sister, cousin, and aunt.

Bushby, now 27 years old and a father of two, was initially granted day parole in August 2023, but it was revoked in July 2024 for violating conditions. He was later granted day parole again in December 2025 and received an extension in June 2026 at a community-based residential facility with substance abuse treatment.

Despite concerns raised by Kentner’s family and Indigenous organizations, the Parole Board of Canada believes that Bushby can be safely reintegrated into society under supervision. Bushby must adhere to seven conditions, including following a treatment plan, abstaining from alcohol and drugs, and avoiding contact with Kentner’s family.

Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) expressed disappointment over Bushby’s release, stating that it feels like a profound injustice and sends a dangerous message. The parole decision has sparked criticism and calls for more substantial actions to prevent future tragedies like Kentner’s death.

The parole board’s decision also highlighted Bushby’s past high-risk behaviors, including incidents involving a Confederate flag tattoo, a vehicle collision, and association with criminal activity. Despite Bushby’s acknowledgment of his mistakes, concerns remain about his ability to reform and the message his release sends to the community.

The Ontario Native Women’s Association (ONWA) CEO, Cora McGuire-Cyrette, criticized the systemic failures that have led to increased violence against Indigenous women and emphasized the need for concrete actions to address the issue. McGuire-Cyrette highlighted the importance of investing in prevention and taking meaningful steps to bring about real change.

For those affected by missing and murdered Indigenous people, support and crisis assistance are available through national hotlines and mental health counseling services.
