“Tumbler Ridge School Demolition Sparks Community Healing”

The demolition of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School this week was a poignant moment for long-time resident Chris Norbury, whose wife was present during the tragic mass shooting in February. Norbury joined other community members to witness the beginning of the tear-down process on Monday.

Expressing empathy for those directly impacted by the event, Norbury emphasized the significance of moving forward as a community. Reflecting on the school’s history spanning four decades, he acknowledged the positive memories created by generations of students. However, following the tragic incident earlier in the year, both students and teachers expressed a collective desire to see the building removed to aid in the healing process.

The demolition marks a pivotal step towards the community’s recovery, signaling the closure of one chapter and the commencement of a new beginning. As the school, erected in the 1980s during Tumbler Ridge’s coal mining era, undergoes deconstruction, plans for a new school are underway.

Students are currently attending classes at a temporary campus while construction progresses on the new facility. Additional facilities, such as a child-care center and a mobile trades training center by the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology, are being established to provide a safe and conducive learning environment. School District 59 board chair Chad Anderson emphasized the importance of ensuring students and staff feel secure and supported as regular class activities resume.

Looking ahead, the former school site will be transformed into a grass field, with discussions ongoing regarding potential permanent memorials. Mayor Darryl Krakowka highlighted the importance of honoring the victims’ families’ wishes in deciding the future of the property. The community is actively engaged in developing a comprehensive recovery plan, with a focus on providing necessary support and resources for all residents.

As plans for the new school take shape, community input will play a crucial role in shaping the design and facilities. Norbury expressed optimism for the future, anticipating the positive impact a new school will have on Tumbler Ridge. The community is united in moving forward, embracing the opportunity for growth and healing.
