“UK Urges Households to Prepare for Digital Voice Transition”

With just six months left until a significant upgrade to the UK’s communications network, additional households have been alerted to the impending changes. Starting January 2027, the UK will bid farewell to its aging copper phone network, making way for Digital Voice, a new service utilizing broadband connections for voice calls instead of traditional copper wires that have been in operation for over a century.

This transition is crucial for households to acknowledge, as failure to switch to Digital Voice may result in the discontinuation of their existing landline service.

A recent campaign called “Don’t Put Off the Switch,” featuring Clare Balding, urged households to verify their landline connections and ensure readiness for the digital era.

Clare Balding emphasized the importance of promptly responding to provider notifications to maintain uninterrupted landline services, stating, “If you don’t act, the services you depend on could face disruptions.”

While the nationwide deadline is half a year away, the migration process is gaining momentum. BT’s Openreach, the operator of the UK’s largest broadband network, has implemented “stop sell” notifications at an additional 112 telephone exchanges.

This action means that broadband providers reliant on the Openreach network, such as BT, Sky, Vodafone, and Plusnet, are no longer permitted to sell or transition customers to older copper-based broadband and phone services within those designated areas.

As explained by Openreach, the “Stop Sell” initiative is activated when a majority (75%) of properties linked to a specific exchange can access ultrafast Full Fibre. Customers seeking to switch, upgrade, or adjust their broadband or phone services will now have to opt for a new digital service via the advanced Full Fibre network.

This latest rollout brings the total number of exchanges under “Stop Sell” regulations to 1,572, encompassing around 15.4 million residences and businesses across the UK.

Despite the perceived complexity of transitioning to full fibre and Digital Voice, the shift promises substantial benefits, including enhanced broadband speeds, more dependable connections, and a contemporary phone service better suited to today’s digital landscape.

Individuals uncertain about the impact on their residence can verify service availability using the Openreach postcode checker.

James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, emphasized the significance of the “Stop Sell” program in expediting the UK’s transition to an advanced full fibre era. With the diminishing capability of copper for modern communications, the immediate emphasis is on migrating individuals to newer, future-proof technologies.

He added, “Phasing out legacy copper-based services in areas with widespread fibre availability ensures customers and providers switch to faster, more reliable digital infrastructure. This strategy not only streamlines the maintenance of old and new networks but also supports the industry-wide migration ahead of the legacy Public Switched Telephone Network switch-off, slated in just six months. By then, everyone will need a digital phone line.”
