The South Carolina Supreme Court has overturned the murder convictions of a lawyer, Alex Murdaugh, who was found guilty of killing his wife and son. The court ruled unanimously that Murdaugh should be given a new trial due to bias from a county clerk, Rebecca Hill, who oversaw the evidence and jury during the original trial.
Murdaugh, aged 57, was convicted in March 2023 for the murders of his wife, Maggie, 52, and his son, Paul, 22, in June 2021. The justices stated that Hill’s actions had unfairly influenced the jury, denying Murdaugh his right to a fair trial by an impartial jury.
Currently serving multiple life sentences for the murders and additional sentences for financial crimes, Murdaugh has denied involvement in his family’s deaths, emphasizing a lack of physical evidence linking him to the crime scene. Prosecutors argued against a retrial, citing substantial evidence against Murdaugh, while his defense highlighted the clerk’s prejudicial behavior.
Hill, who pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and perjury charges, was criticized by the justices for her misconduct, including showing graphic crime scene photos to journalists and using her position to promote a book on the case. Murdaugh’s lawyers expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision to grant a new trial, emphasizing the importance of an impartial judicial process free from external influences.
