London Marathon to Span Two Days in 2027

The London Marathon is set to undergo a unique transformation in 2027, spanning two days to accommodate a larger number of participants and generate significant financial benefits. The decision to expand the event came after a record-breaking 1.33 million individuals entered the ballot for next year’s race. By hosting two separate events, the organizers aim to allow 100,000 people to partake in the London Marathon in 2027.

Scheduled for Saturday, April 24, and Sunday, April 25, the extended event is projected to raise over £150 million for charities and inject a £400 million boost into the UK economy, as confirmed by Hugh Brasher, the chief executive of London Marathon Events (LME). Applicants for next year’s marathon will automatically be entered into a ballot for both days, with the outcomes to be announced in early July.

Describing the 2027 London Marathon as a groundbreaking initiative, Brasher emphasized the goal of engaging more runners, charities, and communities in the renowned marathon. The anticipated contributions to charitable causes and the UK economy are expected to be substantial.

Acknowledging the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including the Mayor of London, local councils, emergency services, and other involved parties, Brasher expressed gratitude for enabling this unprecedented event to take place in London and benefit the entire UK.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan praised the decision to expand the London Marathon into a two-day spectacle in 2027, recognizing London as a global hub for sporting events.

In 2026, the London Marathon witnessed a record 59,830 finishers and emerged as the world’s largest one-day fundraising event, raising over £90 million. The upcoming 2027 plan involves organizing separate days for elite women, elite female wheelchair athletes, championship participants, and ‘good for age’ women, as well as elite men, elite male wheelchair athletes, championship contenders, and ‘good for age’ men.

Brasher revealed to BBC that the concept of a two-day marathon had been in development for nine years, originating in 2017. The initial target was to host the extended event in 2020, but permission was not granted at that time.
