“Nigel Farage under scrutiny for undisclosed £5 million gift”

Nigel Farage reportedly did not disclose a £5 million gift from a cryptocurrency billionaire just before his election as an MP in 2024. The leader of Reform UK received the amount from Christopher Harborne, a tycoon based in Thailand. Parliamentary regulations mandate that new MPs must declare any political donations or gifts received in the year leading up to their entry into Parliament.

The £5 million gift does not appear in the members’ register of interests. Farage claims that the substantial sum was not a political gift but was provided to cover his personal security expenses. This situation has led to demands for an investigation into his conduct.

Harborne bestowed the gift before Farage announced his candidacy in Clacton, as per The Guardian. Following the publication of this information, Farage spoke to The Telegraph about the donation, stating that the funds were utilized for his protection since the Home Office had declined security requests.

Kevin Hollinrake, the Tory chairman, highlighted that as a new MP, Farage was required to report all political donations and gifts he received in the previous year to the House of Commons. Consequently, the Conservatives are referring Nigel Farage to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner regarding the £5 million gift, raising concerns about potential non-compliance with regulations.

Labour’s Anna Turley criticized Farage for allegedly failing to declare the sizable sum from his billionaire supporter, emphasizing the importance of upholding public trust in politics. Harborne has contributed £22 million to Reform since 2019. When the £5 million gift was made in 2024, Farage had not expressed intentions to run for office.

Reform maintains that they have adhered to the rules, characterizing the donation as a personal, unconditional gift. Harry Quilter-Pinner from the IPPR think-tank noted that the revelation of Harborne’s financial support to Farage before his decision to stand for MP raises significant questions and scrutiny.
