Shabana Mahmood has announced £25 million in funding for security measures following the Golders Green attack, acknowledging the insufficiency of words alone. The Home Secretary disclosed the allocation to safeguard Jewish communities in response to the suspected terror incident in north London. The funding is designated to enhance police presence and security measures around synagogues, schools, and community hubs.
Mahmood indicated ongoing discussions with law enforcement and community representatives on addressing recent attacks on the Jewish community, leading to the expedited release of the additional funding. She emphasized the need for tangible actions beyond verbal assurances, recognizing the community’s profound concerns and emotions of fear and insecurity.
Keir Starmer also pledged solidarity with the Jewish community in the aftermath of the Golders Green attack, emphasizing that combating antisemitism is a collective responsibility for everyone in the country. Starmer highlighted the urgency of legislative measures to counteract anti-Semitic acts and extremism, underscoring the importance of swift and effective responses to ensure public trust in the justice system.
The incident, which involved the stabbing of two Jewish men in what has been deemed a terrorist attack, has sparked calls from Jewish leaders for stronger measures against antisemitic violence. Mahmood hinted at potential proscription of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) amid discussions regarding new laws, refraining from specific details on designated organizations under consideration.
The victims, aged 76 and 34, are currently in stable condition in the hospital following the attack. The Jewish community expressed heightened anxiety and security concerns in light of the recent series of assaults, prompting calls for enhanced protection and preventative measures.
