Nigel Farage is on the verge of discovering whether he will face an investigation regarding a £5 million monetary gift from a cryptocurrency tycoon. The leader of Reform UK is under scrutiny following revelations that he received the sum from Christopher Harborne, a businessman based in Thailand, in 2024, just before running for a parliamentary position.
Over the weekend, Nigel Farage’s deputy, Richard Tice, declined to confirm if Farage had accepted any other sizable undisclosed donations from affluent supporters. Farage may potentially be subject to dual inquiries concerning the funds. Despite maintaining that it was an unconditional personal present, Farage could be investigated by the Electoral Commission and Parliament’s standards body to determine if any electoral laws were breached.
The decision on a formal inquiry by the Electoral Commission is anticipated imminently after multiple complaints were lodged. Furthermore, Parliamentary regulations mandate the disclosure of political contributions and gifts received within a year before assuming office, potentially leading to a standards investigation for Farage.
In response to inquiries, Richard Tice defended Farage, emphasizing that the gift was solely intended for the security expenses of the Reform UK leader. However, he refrained from disclosing the existence of additional undisclosed gifts. Tice expressed frustration with persistent questioning, denouncing attempts to tarnish their reputation and expressing that both they and the voters were weary of such allegations.
Following the exposure of the gift by The Guardian, the Conservative Party urged the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner to delve into the matter. Reform UK has maintained that Christopher Harborne’s £5 million contribution was an altruistic personal gesture. Anna Turley, chair of the Labour Party, criticized Farage for allegedly failing to declare the funds and implementing policies favorable to the undisclosed donor.
Turley highlighted unresolved issues concerning Richard Tice’s financial affairs, particularly allegations of unpaid corporation taxes by his company. In a previous statement, Tice pledged to rectify any errors and settle outstanding dues promptly.
Turley further criticized Tice for evading questions about his tax issues, asserting that Reform UK was undermining public trust in politics. In contrast, Tice contended that voters were aware of the situation and expressed continued support for Farage and Reform UK leadership.
When asked about the utilization of the funds, Tice emphasized the paramount importance of Farage’s safety and security, suggesting that the £5 million gift might not suffice for those purposes. Farage, in a recent interview with Sky News, defended the receipt of the gift as a personal transaction within legal boundaries, dismissing any impropriety.
