Reform UK Deputy Under Fire for Racist Remark Silence

Reform UK Deputy Faces Criticism for Failing to Condemn Racist Remark

The deputy of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party has drawn criticism for not outright denouncing a Reform councillor who made a disturbing comment suggesting that Nigerians should be melted down and used to fill potholes.

In a contentious television discussion, Richard Tice expressed frustration over what he labeled as media attacks, when confronted about an offensive online statement attributed to Sunderland councillor Glenn Gibbins. Tice asserted that Reform politicians making “silly remarks” would be scrutinized.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson highlighted the comment as an instance of racism and divisiveness, warning of the dangerous implications. The Labour Party condemned Tice for not explicitly condemning the statement, deeming it “completely abhorrent.” A senior figure from Reform later confirmed Gibbins had been suspended.

When pressed by BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, Tice mentioned an internal party review process. Kuenssberg interjected, questioning the effectiveness of such a process if a person with such views could be elected.

Tice defended his party against what he described as unwarranted attacks, stating that any inappropriate or misguided statements made by party members would be assessed.

The controversial remark, posted from Gibbins’ account before the recent local elections, sparked outrage. Tice reiterated the party’s commitment to addressing internal issues and stressed the focus on the party’s achievements.

In response to calls to condemn the comment directly, Tice maintained a broad stance, stating he condemns anything deemed wrong or inappropriate. He refrained from directly labeling the post as such, emphasizing the voters’ support for Reform as a sign of their desire for proactive measures.

Critics argued that questioning Tice’s response was not an attack but a legitimate inquiry. Meanwhile, Darren Grimes, deputy leader of Durham County Council, confirmed Gibbins’ suspension pending an investigation into the serious allegations.

Tice attempted to shift the discussion to combating anti-Semitism, underscoring the party’s support for the Jewish community. However, the Labour Party criticized Reform’s handling of the situation, alleging a failure to address clear racism.

Efforts to reach Reform UK for a statement were unsuccessful.
