In a 2008 police interview recording played for jurors on Thursday, Duane (Keffe D) Davis disclosed that his nephew Orlando (Baby Lane) Anderson was the one who fired the fatal shots that killed renowned rapper Tupac Shakur in 1996. Davis, who claimed to have been present in the car with Anderson during the incident, is currently facing charges for allegedly orchestrating the killing in Las Vegas.
During the interview with Los Angeles police, Davis mentioned that the white Cadillac he and Anderson were traveling in, along with two other individuals, pulled up next to a vehicle carrying Shakur and hip-hop mogul Marion (Suge) Knight. Davis revealed that he was prepared to shoot but passed his gun to Deandre “Big Dre” Smith since Knight’s car was on the opposite side. However, Smith refused the weapon, leading Anderson, who was also in the back seat, to take it and open fire.
This marked the first time that Davis openly discussed his involvement in the shooting with authorities. The recorded interview is considered crucial evidence in the prosecution’s case against the 63-year-old Davis, with prosecutors emphasizing his admissions during police interviews, podcasts, and his 2019 co-authored memoir, “Compton Street Legend.”
While Davis previously pointed fingers at Knight or Sean (Diddy) Combs for the shooting, he has pleaded not guilty to the current charges. His defense attorney dismissed the prosecution’s claims as “fiction” and criticized the lack of evidence supporting Davis’s statements. Davis was initially a suspect in the unsolved 1997 shooting of Shakur’s rival, the Notorious B.I.G., but was later cleared of involvement.
Prosecutors argued that Davis breached confidentiality by publicly discussing the shooting in subsequent interviews and writings, thereby negating any prior agreements with law enforcement. They alleged that Shakur’s murder was a retaliatory act following an altercation between Shakur’s entourage and Anderson at the MGM Grand.
Despite Shakur’s tragic demise in 1996, his legacy endures as a revered cultural figure and one of the most influential and versatile rappers in history. His impact on the music industry and popular culture remains profound, with his memory continuing to resonate with fans worldwide.
