Former Child Actors Call for Improved Protections

Following the recent passing of Hayden Penettiere, a number of former child actors are raising concerns about the need for improved protections for young actors in Hollywood.

Over the last week, ex-child actors like Anna Paquin and Melissa Gilbert have been sharing their personal struggles with fame and mental well-being, highlighting the vulnerabilities they faced while working at a young age and suggesting ways to bring about positive changes in the industry.

Penettiere, who passed away at the age of 36 earlier this month, sparked renewed conversations about her battles with mental health and substance abuse, as documented in her memoir “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” released in May this year. She is not the only former child actor who has faced such challenges.

In June, Daveigh Chase, known for voicing Lilo in Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch,” passed away at 35 due to complications from AIDS and substance abuse, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. Reports after her death revealed that she had been homeless.

In February last year, Michelle Trachtenberg, famous for roles in “Harriet the Spy” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” died from complications related to diabetes at the age of 39, having undergone a liver transplant prior to her passing.

Paquin, a Canadian actor who started her career at 11 and won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for “The Piano,” expressed in a recent Instagram post that the untimely deaths of these former child actors are not coincidental.

She emphasized that young actors on sets are prematurely exposed to adult themes and highlighted the tragic lives and early deaths of many female child stars.

Paquin criticized the existing systems in place to safeguard young actors, stating that her personal experience revealed they were not as protective as they should have been.

Identifying the Issue

Gilbert, who began her acting career as a child on the series “Little House on the Prairie” in 1974, discussed the recent deaths of former child actors in a piece on her Substack platform, stating, “When three of us die in such proximity, something is seriously amiss.”

She pointed out that child actors are often pressured to perform without question, fearing repercussions if they appear difficult, a dynamic that can make them susceptible to exploitation.
