University of Waterloo PhD student Kaveeshan Thurairajah, along with his team, recently clinched the Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their innovative work on creating a splash-free urinal. The Ig Nobels, a playful spin on the prestigious Nobel Prizes, spotlight unconventional and imaginative research endeavors.
Thurairajah vividly recalls the moment when his supervisor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, broke the news of their victory. Celebrating with a bottle of wine in espresso cups, they were thrilled by the recognition.
The team engineered various urinal prototypes, such as the Nautilus and Cornocopia designs, to minimize splashing and enhance cleanliness. Thurairajah emphasized the Nautilus as the superior model due to its reduced splash and easier maintenance compared to the Cornucopia.
Attending the award ceremony in Zurich in bright yellow raincoats, Thurairajah clarified that their research did not involve actual urine splashing. Instead, they constructed an anatomically accurate device to simulate urination patterns realistically.
Despite the whimsical nature of their project, Thurairajah emphasized its practical significance in improving public restroom facilities. Their research findings were documented in a publication featured in the journal PNAS Nexus.
Apart from Thurairajah’s team, other Canadian researchers were also recognized at the event. Notably, a group from the University of Toronto received the Economics Prize for their study on unethical behaviors of affluent individuals, while McGill University scientists contributed to the Technology Prize for their innovative use of mosquito proboscises in 3D printing.
The Ig Nobel Prizes, hosted by the Annals of Improbable Research, relocated to Europe after 35 years in the U.S. due to visa concerns. Thurairajah stressed the importance of international collaboration in the scientific community and supported the decision to ensure inclusivity among researchers worldwide.
