A man who got married and subsequently fatally struck his best friend on the same day has been sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in prison. James Shirah, 24, expressed regret in court to Terry Taylor Jr’s family, acknowledging his actions and stating that he will spend the rest of his life apologizing.
The tragic incident occurred after an alcohol-induced argument on the day of Shirah’s wedding to Savanah Collier. Following the celebration in Flint, an altercation took place, resulting in Shirah hitting Mr. Taylor with his vehicle. Although Shirah’s lawyer claimed the crash was not intentional, prosecutors argued that Shirah deliberately left the scene before returning to strike Mr. Taylor.
During the sentencing in Flint, Judge Khary Hanible remarked that while he did not view Shirah as a criminal, he held him accountable for the intentional act that led to Mr. Taylor’s death. Shirah had previously pleaded no contest to second-degree murder, driving with a suspended license, and failing to stop at the crash site.
In his defense, Harrell Milhouse explained that the tragic event unfolded amidst a heated argument fueled by alcohol among long-time friends. Eren Taylor, the victim’s cousin, expressed a desire for a severe punishment for Shirah before the sentencing.
Shirah’s wife, who will be sentenced later in May for her involvement, pleaded guilty to being an accessory in the crime. The couple had exchanged vows at a pizzeria just hours before the tragic incident occurred.
