As voters prepare to participate in crucial elections this week, the primary concern on their minds is the rising cost of living. Keir Starmer faces a challenging Thursday as voters in England, Wales, and Scotland head to the polls in what is considered a significant test for the Labour Party since the last general election.
A recent exclusive poll conducted by the Mirror revealed that over 61% of respondents highlighted the financial strain on families as their top priority, followed by healthcare improvements at 44%, immigration reduction at 34%, and crime and policing at 21%.
Worryingly, more than 43% of people fear a decline in their household finances over the next year, with 15% expecting a significant deterioration. Only 18% are optimistic about their financial situation improving.
The survey exposed that concerns over rising energy bills, affecting 33% of respondents, and escalating food and drink costs at 30%, are top of mind for the majority. A significant 58% of participants believe the government should take further steps to address energy costs amidst global price surges due to the Iran conflict.
The Deltapoll survey underscores the tough landscape for Labour as they face potential losses in the upcoming elections. Reform UK leads in voter preferences with 29%, followed by Labour at 21%, the Tories at 19%, Greens at 12%, and the Lib Dems at 9%. Notably, only half of former Labour voters from 2024 remain loyal, with Reform UK and Greens gaining support.
In Scotland, the SNP leads at 35%, followed by Labour at 23% and Reform at 17%. In Wales, Reform and Plaid Cymru are neck and neck at 25% and 24%, respectively, with Labour close behind at 22%.
Despite negative approval ratings for all party leaders, Kemi Badenoch holds the highest at -2, while Keir Starmer faces the lowest at -44. The public sentiment towards the Prime Minister is also negative, with only 24% believing he is performing well in his role.
The TUC general secretary highlighted the growing concern over the cost of living, exacerbated by recent global events. He emphasized the need for government intervention to protect households and businesses facing financial strains.
Joe Twyman from Deltapoll emphasized the significance of these elections as a precursor to the next General Election. The data suggests challenges for the government, especially regarding economic worries and the Prime Minister’s unpopularity.
A Labour campaign source affirmed their commitment to addressing cost of living issues and supporting communities, contrasting their efforts with Reform UK and Nigel Farage’s self-serving agenda. They emphasized initiatives to alleviate financial burdens on families and boost essential services like the NHS.
