Police have verified the discovery of six deceased individuals inside a freight train carriage. The distressing finding took place at a railyard in Laredo on Sunday, May 10, on a Union Pacific cargo train. Authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation following this surprising revelation.
As reported by KGNS, the Laredo police department confirmed the presence of six deceased individuals around 2:30 p.m. at 12101 Jim Young Way near mile marker 13. Officials have not yet disclosed the identities or nationalities of the deceased or confirmed if they were migrants. Laredo, situated across from Nuevo Laredo in Mexico, serves as a key border crossing point between the US and Mexico.
Notably, in July 2024, Border Patrol agents in the Laredo Sector rescued 23 migrants who were trying to hide on a Union Pacific train. The agents found them locked inside an autorack railcar and successfully brought them to safety.
These recent fatalities occurred amid a period of intense heat in the region, with weather reports indicating temperatures reaching approximately 95°F, and the heat index soaring to around 104°F on Sunday afternoon, as per the Mirror US.
Union Pacific expressed deep sorrow over the incident and is collaborating closely with law enforcement in the investigative process.
