Dozens of vacationers were compelled to evacuate a hotel at a popular vacation destination following an explosion that ripped through the building, causing a fire visible for a considerable distance. The fifth floor of the four-star Olas Hotel in the Costa Tropical resort of Almunecar, approximately 50 miles east of Malaga, sustained significant damage from the explosion, resulting in one individual being injured.
At the time of the incident, the hotel was 60% occupied with guests arriving for the beginning of the Easter holiday. The commotion ensued as employees from energy company Repsol were replenishing fuel tanks for the hotel’s boiler on the terrace. Subsequently, flames rapidly engulfed the upper level, emitting a large column of smoke that could be seen from several miles away. Emergency personnel swiftly responded, evacuating holidaymakers while fire crews worked to extinguish the blaze.
The injured individual, identified as the driver of the propane gas truck, was transported to Santa Ana Hospital in the nearby town of Motril for treatment. Additionally, two firefighters received medical attention for smoke inhalation. An investigation into the incident is currently underway, with authorities making frantic efforts to secure alternative lodging for the tourists displaced from the hotel.
A spokesperson from a regional government-operated emergency response coordination center stated, “Following an explosion that occurred yesterday on the rooftop of a hotel in Almunecar, Granada province, one person has been injured.” The spokesman further added details regarding the response efforts and the evacuation of guests as a safety measure.
The timeline for re-opening the hotel to guests remains uncertain as of this morning. The local mayor expressed gratitude that none of the 44 affected guests suffered fatalities or injuries, attributing the relatively minor damage mainly to property. The hotel, also known as Hotel Carmen in the area, is described as a seaside Mediterranean retreat that offers a blend of relaxation, fine dining, and cultural experiences.
Authorities have not disclosed whether any British or Irish tourists were present at the hotel during the explosion.
