A tragic incident in northern Vietnam has claimed the life of a young British woman. Orla Wates, a 19-year-old from London, was involved in a fatal motorcycle accident while exploring the Ha Giang Loop during her gap year. Unfortunately, she lost control of her motorbike and was struck by an oncoming vehicle. Despite being rushed to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital in Hanoi, Orla succumbed to her injuries on April 2.
Described as beautiful, independent, and witty by her mother, Henrietta Wates, Orla was on the verge of beginning her studies at Durham University. In a touching gesture, Orla’s parents, Andrew and Henrietta, made the decision to donate her organs to help save the lives of other patients at the hospital. Henrietta expressed gratitude towards the medical team at the hospital for their care and support during such a challenging time for their family.
As a way to honor Orla’s love for Vietnam, Mr. Wates, a prominent figure in the Wates building firm and Wates Family Enterprise Trust, shared on Viet Duc Friendship Hospital’s Facebook page their desire to give back to the country that held a special place in Orla’s heart.
The selfless act of organ donation by Orla’s family has not gone unnoticed. The hospital representative highlighted the profound impact of their decision, emphasizing how it transcended boundaries of nationality and race, offering hope and a second chance at life to patients in need of organ transplants in Vietnam.
Vietnam’s health minister, Dao Hong Lan, extended her condolences and appreciation to Orla’s family for their generous contribution amidst their grief. The spirit of Orla’s life lives on through the lives she has touched with her act of kindness and generosity.
