Crowds in Iran took to the streets to set US and Israeli flags ablaze following the agreement of a two-week ceasefire just before the looming deadline set by Donald Trump.
The ceasefire was reached among Iran, the US, and Israel on Wednesday after the Pakistani Prime Minister’s call for more time to facilitate diplomatic talks between the conflicting nations. Prior to the last-minute ceasefire, Trump had issued a grave ultimatum, warning of dire consequences if a resolution was not reached, stating that civilization would face irreversible consequences.
Trump retracted his doomsday threats mere hours before the deadline he imposed on Tehran for compliance. Demonstrators supporting the government in Iran’s capital vociferated slogans of animosity towards America and Israel, along with those who seek compromise, post the ceasefire announcement, while also burning flags of the two nations in the streets.
This incident underscores the persistent resentment from hardliners who had been gearing up for what was anticipated to be a catastrophic confrontation with the US. The two-week ceasefire was agreed upon under the condition that Iran would permit the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, which had been obstructed since the onset of the conflict with the US and Israel through tanker attacks.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, confirmed that passage through the strait would be overseen by the Iranian military. The arrangement allows for both Iran and Oman to levy fees on vessels transiting through the strait, as per a regional official.
