An experienced mountaineer lost her life in a fatal avalanche while descending Mount Makalu in Nepal, one of the world’s highest peaks. Shelley Johannesen, aged 53 and a mother of three, tragically passed away at an altitude of approximately 24,000 feet after successfully reaching the summit of the fifth highest mountain in the world.
Her partner, David Ashley, who was climbing with her and two Nepali guides, shared the heartbreaking news on social media, revealing that Shelley died in his arms due to injuries sustained in the avalanche. He expressed his profound grief over the loss, describing it as “utterly soul crushing.”
In a recent update, Ashley disclosed that he sought professional help to cope with the immense sorrow of losing Shelley. He emphasized the struggle with despair but also noted a gradual return to a sense of normalcy.
Shelley had been chronicling her expedition online before the tragic incident. In her final post, she mentioned the anticipation of a challenging climb at Makalu Base Camp and expressed readiness for the adventure with her team.
Mount Makalu, towering at 27,838 feet, presents formidable challenges due to its steep terrain and unpredictable weather conditions. According to officials, Shelley had just achieved the summit before the avalanche struck near the mountain’s third camp. Despite receiving medical attention on the mountain, she succumbed to her injuries before her body was transported to Kathmandu.
Ashley is now organizing cremation services in Nepal as per Shelley’s wishes and planning a memorial service in the United States with her family. He shared a poignant message urging people to cherish their loved ones while they are still present.
The tragic incident occurred shortly after Ashley initiated a fundraising campaign linked to the Makalu expedition, aiming to become the first living kidney donor to attempt climbing the peak. In the campaign, he highlighted his previous kidney donation and climbing achievements as a means to inspire others and challenge misconceptions about living kidney donors’ capabilities.
He emphasized the expedition’s significance in promoting awareness about living kidney donation and inspiring others to break boundaries.
