Golfer David McDonald, an 85-year-old resident of Fall River, N.S., recently achieved a remarkable feat by shooting an even-par 72 at the challenging Ashburn Golf Club’s new course. Known for its long layout and large, fast greens, the course presented a tough test for McDonald. Expressing his excitement, McDonald mentioned that shooting a 72 had not been a frequent occurrence for him, making it a memorable achievement where everything seemed to align perfectly.
McDonald usually plays from the silver tees, covering nearly 5,800 yards, making it a demanding trek around the course, although shorter than the 7,000 yards from the back tees. Scoring one’s age in golf is considered a significant accomplishment, and surpassing it by 13 strokes is indeed impressive.
Despite his age, McDonald remains an active golfer, playing three or four times a week and often opting to walk the course. He emphasized the importance of staying active, citing his past heart issues while acknowledging the strength in his knees, hips, and legs, signaling his intent to maintain his active lifestyle.
Peter Stirling, a friend of McDonald who frequently plays golf with him, praised McDonald’s dedication to fitness and the game. Stirling highlighted McDonald’s preference for walking the course and his commitment to staying fit, even during the winter months.
Capturing McDonald’s consistency on the golf course, CBC News recently filmed him showcasing his skills, including hitting precise drives, executing challenging bunker shots, and sinking crucial putts. This level of performance enables McDonald to consistently score in the high 70s.
McDonald’s journey in golf began at the age of 30 while serving in the air force in Cape Breton. He quickly excelled in the sport, winning three national titles in military tournaments. Golf became a significant part of his life during his military career, leading to numerous accolades and recognitions, including induction into the Cape Breton Sport Hall of Fame in 2005.
With 17 career holes-in-one under his belt, McDonald continues to pursue his 18th ace, reflecting his enduring passion for the game. He attributes his longevity to a combination of healthy eating habits, regular exercise, and the joy that golf brings into his life, emphasizing the importance of staying active and connected with friends through the sport.
