Lak Shoan, the director of policy for the Ontario Trucking Association, mentioned that they began receiving reports from a few members about the Ambassador Bridge’s outreach activities in the spring. This information came up in casual conversations, indicating that the bridge was making efforts to engage more companies.
When contacted by CBC Windsor, Canadian trucking companies with cross-border operations declined to comment on whether they had been approached by the Ambassador Bridge with toll rate offers. Meanwhile, a U.S. trucking union official instructed members not to use the newly opened Gordie Howe bridge due to a contract with the Ambassador Bridge that saved them $240,000 monthly on tolls.
Toll rates and revenue played a significant role in the prolonged political process to open the $6.4 billion Gordie Howe bridge, funded entirely by the Canadian government. The agreement for the bridge’s opening includes a provision allowing the U.S. government to prevent the new bridge from setting tolls below the average of similar regional crossings.
The wealthy Moroun family, owners of the Ambassador Bridge since 1979, increased their political influence efforts leading up to U.S. President Donald Trump’s sudden threat to block the new crossing. Despite the delayed opening, the Gordie Howe bridge eventually welcomed traffic on July 27.
Accusations have been made against Trump for allegedly attempting to prevent the new bridge’s opening to benefit the Morouns. The Ambassador Bridge did not respond to inquiries before the article’s publication but hinted at a cost-effective toll program for certain trucking companies on their website.
The Ontario Trucking Association expressed support for healthy competition between the bridges, which could potentially lower toll costs for trucking companies. Financial details from a Facebook post by UAW Local 212 Chair JT Barrett shed light on the exclusive toll contract FCA Transport has with the Ambassador Bridge.
Stellantis, the parent company of FCA Transport, refrained from confirming the exclusive toll contract. They welcomed the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, emphasizing its importance as a crucial border crossing in North America.
