The head of Russia’s sole recognized anti-war party has affirmed his decision to remain in the country and continue advocating for change, despite escalating pressure from the authorities resulting in the party being barred from the upcoming parliamentary elections. The Supreme Court recently ruled to exclude the post-Soviet liberal party Yabloko, meaning “apple” in Russian, from the September vote. Nikolai Rybakov, the party leader, indicated that the ruling was a response to the authorities’ apprehension that their stance on ending the prolonged conflict in Ukraine was resonating with voters.
Rybakov emphasized the significance of the prevailing public support over the court’s decision, citing the vocal backing from numerous demonstrators outside the court premises who vehemently expressed their disapproval. Once a prominent liberal voice in parliament and a government critic, Yabloko now holds only a few regional seats and lacks representation in the State Duma, where the Putin-backed United Russia party holds sway.
While United Russia is poised to maintain its dominance in the upcoming elections, Rybakov suggested that Yabloko could pose a stronger challenge if permitted to participate. The party is currently appealing the Supreme Court’s ruling, which stemmed from allegations of undisclosed campaign assistance from Western sources, among other accusations that Yabloko refutes.
Rybakov reiterated his commitment to staying in Russia despite stringent censorship regulations and wartime legislation that have prompted many dissenting voices and activists to flee or face legal repercussions for expressing anti-war sentiments. He stressed the importance of effecting change from within the country, asserting that being present in Russia is crucial for transforming the political landscape.
Public sentiment against the war is challenging to gauge due to stringent government restrictions on dissent. However, according to the Levada Center, a non-governmental pollster classified as a foreign agent by Moscow, the proportion of Russians endorsing their armed forces’ actions in Ukraine decreased to 66% in July, marking the lowest level since February 2022.
Rybakov highlighted the surge in support for Yabloko’s concise manifesto advocating for peace and a democratic Russia, indicating a growing segment of society desiring an end to the conflict. He emphasized the resilience of the party’s shared ideals among millions of like-minded individuals, despite attempts to suppress its presence through coercive measures and restrictions.
Social media has been abuzz with videos backing Yabloko, featuring individuals holding apples as a symbol of support or engaging in dances to Russian tunes referencing the fruit as an indirect nod to the party’s cause.
