Alton Towers and Thorpe Park have been identified as major tourist attractions in the UK that may not meet visitors’ expectations due to factors like high prices and long wait times. The analysis conducted by consumer platform idealo considered aspects such as average reviews, negative feedback percentage, and mentions of issues like lengthy queues and expensive costs to create a ‘tourist trap score’ to gauge visitor satisfaction.
Leading the list is Thorpe Park, located in Surrey, which received criticism for its pricing. Many reviews mentioned concerns about the value for money, with over 21% of visitors expressing dissatisfaction with the costs. Additionally, overcrowding and cleanliness problems were highlighted, contributing to a perfect 10 out of 10 tourist trap score.
Following closely is Alton Towers, another theme park under Merlin Entertainments. While it had fewer complaints about overcrowding compared to Thorpe Park, issues regarding pricing persisted, with nearly 19% of reviews emphasizing cost-related concerns and labeling the experience as a “rip-off.”
Responding to the findings, a spokesperson from Merlin Entertainments stated their commitment to enhancing guest experiences by offering tools such as live queue information to help visitors plan better. They also mentioned record satisfaction scores in 2025 and ongoing investments in attractions for visitors’ enjoyment.
In third place is the Eden Project in Cornwall, known for its biodomes housing numerous plant species. Despite a higher average rating, it faced criticism for its pricing, with nearly 38% of reviews mentioning cost-related issues, including ticket prices for adults and children.
The overall analysis by idealo highlighted that the gap between expectations, costs, and reality often leads to visitor dissatisfaction at these top attractions. In contrast, places like Warner Bros. Studio Tour and Durham Cathedral were praised for their value and organization.
A representative from the Eden Project emphasized their commitment to providing good value for money and evolving visitor experiences. They highlighted efforts to reduce ticket prices and support nature-recovery initiatives, showcasing the broader positive impact beyond being just a tourist attraction.
