Ebola Screening Begins at Chicago Airport

Screening procedures have commenced at a major airport in the United States following an Ebola outbreak in various regions of Africa. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) initiated screening for select travelers at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on May 20, in response to the outbreak. This action follows the CDC’s directive that any US passport holders recently visiting the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan will be prohibited from entering the country for at least 30 days.

Ebola, a highly contagious disease transmitted through bodily fluids, is known for causing severe haemorrhagic fever, rapid organ failure, and bleeding. Dr. Tyler Evans, CEO of Wellness Equity Alliance, expressed significant concern over the infectious nature of Ebola. The outbreak, which the World Health Organization has classified as a global public health emergency, continues to spread in East and Central Africa.

Reports indicate that at least six Americans have had potential exposure to Ebola. An American doctor infected with Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been transferred to Germany for treatment, along with his family. The CDC has implemented screening measures at O’Hare airport to prevent the virus from entering the US, with specific restrictions for travelers from Uganda, the DRC, or South Sudan.

Travelers who have visited these countries in the last 21 days are subject to enhanced screening procedures, including temperature checks, exposure inquiries, and contact-tracing data collection. Those displaying symptoms or fevers will undergo a secondary evaluation at a quarantine station within the airport. Cleared individuals will receive a care kit with instructions for self-monitoring their temperature twice daily for three weeks.

US President Donald Trump expressed his concerns about the Ebola outbreak, noting its current confinement to Africa but acknowledging the potential for further spread.
