Scottish Widows has introduced a new tool designed to assist individuals in locating misplaced pension funds. The UK is believed to have approximately 3.3 million unclaimed pension pots, amounting to a total value of £31.1 billion. Factors contributing to pension funds being lost or forgotten include frequent job changes and failure to update personal information following a change of address.
In collaboration with fintech partner The Pension Lab, Scottish Widows has unveiled a new service accessible through its app. Users are required to input their National Insurance number and other relevant details such as previous employers, pension providers, and active years for the pension. Subsequently, customers need to electronically authorize The Pension Lab to contact providers on their behalf.
Once located, customers have the option to either retain their pension pots with the current providers or consolidate them. Prior to making substantial decisions regarding pension funds, it is advisable to seek free pension advice. MoneyHelper offers free guidance on retirement savings options.
Chira Barua, the CEO of Scottish Widows, emphasized the importance of reuniting individuals with their scattered pension savings to enhance retirement outcomes. The simplicity and accessibility of the pension tracing tool aim to consolidate pensions efficiently, enabling individuals to gain a comprehensive understanding of their financial future and take control of their finances.
The Pension Tracing Service, a government tool, aids in tracking down lost pensions by providing contact details of pension providers based on previous employment information. However, the service does not disclose investment amounts, necessitating direct contact with pension administrators for fund details. A new pensions dashboard tool is also set to be launched, allowing individuals to view all pension information in one place by October 31, 2026.
The primary objective remains to empower individuals to manage their finances effectively through digital tools and support. The initiative aligns with the growing demand for user-friendly financial management solutions, emphasizing the fusion of innovation with practical assistance to translate intentions into tangible actions.
