Stampede Winner Misses $125k Prize Deadline

Calgarian Curtis Geiger experienced a week filled with ups and downs. After discovering that the 50/50 ticket he bought at the Calgary Stampede rodeo on July 11 was a winning ticket worth $125,150, Geiger was elated but later faced disappointment. Despite his excitement and hopes of early retirement, Geiger’s joy turned to frustration when he was informed that the 48-hour window to claim the prize had passed.

In an email response from the Calgary Stampede shared with CBC News, it was stated that all prizes for the Show Band 50/50 draw had either been claimed or the window to claim had expired. This news came as a huge blow to Geiger, who expressed regret for missing the deadline and voiced his dissatisfaction with the organization’s handling of the situation.

The Calgary Stampede clarified that the 48-hour claim period is a standard practice outlined in the lottery rules set by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis (AGLC). Despite Geiger’s argument that the wording on the ticket was unclear regarding the claim period, the Stampede emphasized the importance of adhering to the established regulations.

Geiger, contemplating legal action, sought advice from Toronto-based lawyer Farhad Shekib, who suggested that there may be grounds for a breach of contract case based on the clarity and fairness of the claim window communication. Geiger is now exploring his legal options while advocating for improved transparency to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The unclaimed prize funds from the lottery are allocated to the Stampede and the Calgary Marching Show Band Association in compliance with AGLC requirements. Geiger’s story serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of understanding lottery terms and deadlines to avoid disappointment and potential legal issues.
