A woman and a young child shocked a trainspotter by ducking under a railway level crossing barrier as it was closing. Brandon Roberts, the trainspotter, captured the incident at Tutbury and Hatton Station in Derbyshire. The woman and child hurried across the tracks despite warning lights flashing, just as a train was approaching.
The video footage shows the woman and child crossing the tracks with a man in a brown shirt leading the way. The dangerous act was widely criticized on social media, prompting Network Rail to issue a warning about the severe risks associated with ignoring level crossing safety measures.
A Network Rail spokesperson emphasized the potential tragic consequences of such reckless behavior, highlighting the importance of respecting warning signals and barriers for the safety of all involved. The incident sparked discussions among the public, with many emphasizing the high speeds of trains in the UK and the fatal risks of trespassing on railway tracks.
In response to the incident, Network Rail launched the ‘No Second Chances’ campaign in collaboration with the British Transport Police to raise awareness about level crossing safety. Research revealed a concerning level of overconfidence among the British population regarding the dangers at rail crossings, despite the significant distance trains need to stop in emergency situations.
The East Coast Main Line has witnessed numerous near misses between trains and pedestrians due to risky behaviors at level crossings, underscoring the critical need for public awareness and adherence to safety protocols.
