A company in Saskatchewan is currently engaged in hydrogen drilling to demonstrate the feasibility of extracting hydrogen from the ground on a commercial scale instead of relying on fossil fuel production. Regina-based Max Power Mining has initiated the drilling of its third well at the Lawson Complex in southern Saskatchewan earlier this month.
The company envisions establishing the world’s first large-scale commercial natural hydrogen system, offering a new primary energy source. According to Chad Levesque, the president and director of the company, hydrogen plays a crucial role in various industries such as ammonia production, petroleum refining, and transitioning to more environmentally friendly energy sources. He emphasized the importance of sourcing hydrogen in a more ecologically sustainable manner, highlighting the potential of naturally occurring hydrogen.
Hydrogen serves as a versatile gas that can be utilized as a fuel or in fuel cells to generate electricity, producing water as the only byproduct without emitting greenhouse gases directly. This attribute has positioned hydrogen as a promising energy source for sectors like transportation and steelmaking. However, the majority of commercially available hydrogen is grey hydrogen, produced from fossil fuels without emission reduction measures, contributing significantly to carbon dioxide emissions.
In contrast, green hydrogen, produced through water electrolysis using renewable energy sources, is a cleaner alternative but currently lacks cost competitiveness. Natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, presents an appealing prospect as it can be extracted from underground deposits with relatively low greenhouse gas emissions, leveraging existing drilling infrastructure and techniques used in the extraction of natural gas and helium.
The formation of natural hydrogen underground primarily occurs through processes like serpentinization and radioactive decay, offering a potential source of hydrogen. While natural hydrogen deposits have been discovered in various regions globally, including parts of Canada, challenges remain in terms of extraction and commercial viability. The successful extraction of natural hydrogen could provide a significant contribution to decarbonization efforts, but further research and development are required to realize its full potential.
