Rescuers are currently on a mission to locate 27 individuals who went missing when a passenger vessel sank in turbulent waters off the eastern coast of Indonesia.
The ill-fated boat, Nazila 05, was en route from Taliabu Island in North Maluku province to Kema, a coastal village within the same province, with a total of 27 passengers and crew members on board. The incident unfolded shortly after sunset yesterday, as detailed by Muhammad Rizal, the head of the local search and rescue office.
The distressing event came to light when the vessel’s owner, Rifani Samatia, was alerted by the captain of Nazila 05 about the vessel sustaining damage to its bow due to rough weather conditions, ultimately leading to its submersion approximately half an hour later.
According to Mr. Rizal, the voyage commenced on Sunday at 6 pm local time, with the captain’s distress call coming in at around 4 am local time the following day, confirming the vessel’s tragic fate. While all crew members managed to evacuate using a lifeboat, their current whereabouts remain unknown.
North Maluku province encompasses the northern region of the Maluku Islands, a pristine archipelago in Indonesia renowned for its picturesque white sand beaches and active volcanoes. Historically recognized as the ‘Spice Islands’ by Dutch colonizers due to the abundant cultivation of cloves and nutmeg, the Maluku Islands boast a rich cultural and natural heritage.
