Italians were left stunned following the dismissal of a U.S. principal for presenting a photo of Michelangelo’s renowned sculpture David to students, which led to complaints from parents labeling it as “pornography.”
Hope Carrasquilla, who recently took over as principal at Tallahassee Classical School in Florida, was terminated after three parents raised objections to the content of an art class she conducted. The lesson involved teaching students about Renaissance art, showcasing pieces like “David,” “Creation of Adam” fresco painting, and “Birth of Venus,” all depicting nude figures.
Upon being instructed by the school’s board chair, Barney Bishop, Carrasquilla was given the ultimatum to resign or face termination. This decision sparked confusion and anger among locals in Italy, where masterpieces of Renaissance art, including Michelangelo’s David, are revered.
The Mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, criticized the incident, calling it “ridiculous.” He expressed his support for the teacher on Twitter, emphasizing the importance of art education and extending an invitation for recognition on behalf of the city.
The move to force Carrasquilla’s resignation received widespread condemnation, with social media users and officials alike questioning the decision. A satirical cartoon published on the front page of the Italian daily Corriere della Sera depicted David with his genitals covered by an image of Uncle Sam, accompanied by the word “Shame.”
In response to the invitation to Florence, Carrasquilla expressed her gratitude and hinted at potentially accepting the offer. She praised the artistic significance of Florence and the opportunity to visit the city.
Cecilie Hollberg, director of the Galleria dell’Accademia, where David is housed, expressed disbelief at the controversy, emphasizing that considering such art as pornographic reflects a lack of understanding of biblical themes, Western culture, and Renaissance art.
After the school incident, the board enforced a new policy mandating parental notification two weeks in advance of any potentially contentious curriculum. Some parents voiced frustration over the communication gap with the school and the turnover of teachers.
Barney Bishop defended the board’s decision, stating that while the statue photo played a role in Carrasquilla’s removal, it was not the sole reason. He emphasized the importance of informing parents about controversial topics and images used in education.
