London’s latest fashion event has kicked off, showcasing innovative African-inspired designs by emerging talents alongside a vibrant Afrobeat music runway. Renowned luxury designer Veekee James, a Forbes Under 30 honoree, graced the event at The InterContinental London, Greenwich over the weekend, lauding the celebration of African fashion on a global scale.
Veekee expressed her joy at the increasing recognition of African fashion worldwide, emphasizing the elevation of African creativity across various domains. The day-long affair, organized by RAFT X, featured a mix of activities including a runway presentation, a talent show reminiscent of X-Factor with a lucrative cash prize, and networking opportunities with businesses like the British-Nigerian food company Puff Puff Ministry.
RAFT X, a newly established annual event dedicated to arts, culture, and community, drew praise from talent show judge DJ Abass for its role in promoting African talent and culture. The event culminated in the triumph of spoken-word artist Jessica Edgar, known as Poetess Jess, who left judges awestruck with her performance.
Reflecting on her win, Jessica expressed gratitude for the platform provided by the event, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and support within the Black creative community. Judge Tolu Adepegba, popularly known as Lady T, commended the multicultural essence of the event, highlighting the growing influence of African culture globally.
Organized by Harvesters UK, RAFT X aimed to showcase diverse talents while fostering a sense of community and creativity. Pastor Dayo Ogunrombi of Harvesters UK underscored the event’s cultural significance and its role in nurturing aspiring individuals. Looking ahead, Mr. Ogunrombi expressed ambitions of expanding RAFT X to a larger venue next year and attracting more sponsors and brands.
