Emergency services responded to a serious incident where a woman was attacked with a knife in a crowded street. Law enforcement quickly mobilized at Amersfoort Central train station in Utrecht after a man, believed to be the assailant, fled onto a train headed in that direction.
Authorities confirmed that the 23-year-old suspect was captured on CCTV boarding a train bound for Amersfoort Central station at approximately 9:30 pm following the assault. Upon arrival, a significant police presence awaited the suspect, as multiple police units rushed to the scene, as reported by The Star.
Police officers, equipped with stun guns and utilizing a shield tactic, boarded the train and encircled the suspect, with K-9 units also being called in for support. The suspect surrendered peacefully to the authorities at the station.
The extensive operation concluded around 10:15 pm, with the apprehended suspect being transferred to the local police station. Subsequently, all police units swiftly departed the train station, allowing normal services to resume.
The injured woman, reportedly aged 50, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries; however, police did not disclose further details regarding her condition. According to a spokesperson from the Central Netherlands Police speaking to local publication De Staf Amersfoort, the 23-year-old suspect, believed to be homeless, allegedly assaulted the 50-year-old woman on Van Sijpesteijnkade in Utrecht.
Following the incident, police used CCTV footage to swiftly identify the suspect as he fled via Utrecht Central Station. Monitoring his movements, officers coordinated multiple police units to intercept him upon his arrival in Amersfoort.
