King Charles recently concluded his fast-paced visit to the United States, where he and Queen Camilla participated in a series of events across Washington DC, Virginia, and New York over a four-day period. Despite this being the King’s first visit to America in many years, he did not venture to the West Coast to reunite with his son, Prince Harry, or his grandchildren Archie and Lilibet.
The relationship between Harry and his father remains strained, with only a few meetings between them in recent years. Their last face-to-face encounter was in September last year in London during the annual WellChild awards.
It was known well in advance of Charles’s US trip that he would not have the opportunity to see his son, daughter-in-law Meghan Markle, or their children during his official visit.
Royal expert Jennie Bond believes that Harry may have had mixed emotions witnessing his father’s highly publicized visit to the country where he has resided for over six years. Bond expressed that while it was not surprising that Harry did not meet his father during the state visit, it must have been surreal for him to observe Charles being celebrated in the country that Harry now calls home.
Bond also suggested that there is a possibility for the father and son to mend their relationship behind closed doors after years of estrangement. She emphasized that their strained relationship may require private reconciliation rather than a public display, especially after such a high-profile visit.
Despite Harry’s withdrawal from royal duties since 2020, he and his father share common interests and charitable endeavors. Nevertheless, seeing his father engaging in philanthropic activities in his home country may have felt surreal for Harry, according to Bond.
Regarding President Trump’s involvement during the visit, he took a jab at Meghan Markle, escalating tensions further between him and the couple. Bond indicated that while the visit may have improved US-UK relations, it did not contribute positively to the relationship between the President and Harry and Meghan.
Bond highlighted Harry’s stance on the importance of speaking truth to power and suggested that his conflicted feelings about his royal family’s role might have been amplified during the visit.
In summary, the visit had both personal and political implications for the royal family, highlighting the complexities and challenges that persist within their relationships.
