Fernando Alonso is reportedly considering a return to Alpine, his former team, amid ongoing struggles for form at Aston Martin. While Alonso had previously expressed his intention to finish his Formula 1 career with Aston Martin, rumors are circulating in the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix paddock about a potential switch.
Alonso, who is approaching his 45th birthday in July, has had three previous stints with the Enstone-based outfit. His most successful period was when he clinched consecutive drivers’ championships in 2005 and 2006 with Renault. Speculation is growing that Alonso could reunite with boss Flavio Briatore, his longtime manager, at Alpine, signaling a possible return to the team.
If Alonso were to make the move, he would have to depart from his current agreement with Aston Martin. Despite nearing the end of his racing career, Alonso is believed to have a deal in place that would transition him into an ambassadorial role with the team post-retirement, maintaining his ties to Formula 1 for years to come.
Aston Martin, while holding great promise, is facing challenging times. The team’s performance has fallen short of expectations this season, despite aiming to move up the grid and contend for the World Championship. The partnership with Honda for engines has had a rocky start, adding to the team’s woes.
In contrast, Alpine has shown improvement this year after finishing last in the constructors’ championship in 2025. With Briatore back at the helm and the support of potent Mercedes engines, Alpine currently ranks fifth as the leading midfield team in 2026.
Alonso is in a positive mood at the Barcelona circuit this weekend, where he last tasted victory in 2013. However, with the track likely not featuring on the 2027 race calendar, Alonso hinted that this could be his final Formula 1 race at Montmelo. He expressed gratitude to fans and hinted at making a decision on his future after the summer.
