A leading US airline with a daily flight volume exceeding 5,000 flights faced significant disruptions, resulting in the cancellation of hundreds of flights within a 48-hour timeframe. Delta Air Lines encountered operational challenges over the weekend, leading to over 400 flight cancellations and more than 1,000 delays. This disruption equated to approximately 4% of its scheduled flights on Friday and around 7% on Saturday, as per FlightAware data.
The airline attributed the disruptions to various factors, including staffing shortages, adverse weather conditions, and a looming jet fuel shortage. Major airports such as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport experienced the impact of these disruptions. Consequently, Delta’s reliability ranking dropped to sixth place nationwide, according to the US Department of Transportation.
At Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, the airline’s primary hub, pilot staffing shortages led to a cancellation rate more than ten times the usual level, accounting for about 35% of all cancelled flights. This rate was nearly four times higher than in 2024, as reported by Express news.
In a separate development, US budget carrier Spirit Airlines concluded its operations after 34 years in the industry. Once valued at approximately $5.5 billion in the stock market, the airline officially ceased operations following its final flight from Detroit to Dallas.
Spirit Airlines’ CEO, Dave Davis, expressed disappointment over the airline’s closure, highlighting its role in enhancing travel accessibility and affordability over the past three decades. Plans for the airline to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy were jeopardized by volatile oil and jet fuel prices, which surged following the US-Israeli strikes on February 28.
Financial analysts at JPMorgan cautioned in April that Spirit Airlines could face a cost increase of around $360 million if fuel prices remain high throughout the year. With approximately $337 million in cash reserves at the end of the previous year, the airline’s financial outlook remains uncertain.
