Elusive artist Banksy sparked curiosity this week by sharing images of his latest creation on Instagram. The artwork features a lighthouse silhouette with the mysterious phrase, “I want to be what you see in me.” Without providing any further details, Banksy’s followers were left to speculate on the location of the artwork.
A second photo showed an elderly couple walking their dogs near the lighthouse, further fueling speculation online. Social media users on platforms like Instagram and X have been actively sharing theories, with many suggesting that the artwork could be situated in southern France, particularly in Marseille.
Some enthusiasts have pointed out potential locations in Marseille, with one person claiming to have identified the precise address of the artwork. The meaning behind the artwork remains a puzzle, but there are suggestions that the quoted phrase may be inspired by the song ‘Lonely’ by the country band Lonestar.
Known for his politically charged artworks, Banksy has addressed various social issues in his pieces, including immigration, homelessness, and conflicts like the one in Ukraine. In past projects, Banksy has also incorporated more cryptic messages, adding layers of mystery to his work.
In a notable series of artworks unveiled in the summer of 2024 in London, Banksy showcased animal-themed pieces featuring monkeys, wolves, pelicans, goats, cats, and elephants. These pieces, created in his signature black stencil style, were revealed at different locations across the city over a nine-day period, captivating art enthusiasts and passersby alike.
