Concerns have been raised by unions regarding a council led by Reform UK and its commitment to reopening Doncaster Sheffield Airport. The airport, which has been closed since 2022 due to financial viability issues, has seen Doncaster Council sign a 125-year lease for the land in 2024.
In a move to assist in reopening the airport, councillors agreed last November to secure a £57 million loan. However, there are apprehensions among unions that the council might backtrack on this decision. Prior to the loan approval, Doncaster Council sanctioned an initial £16 million fund to kickstart the airport reopening efforts, a sum that could be at risk if the plans fall through. A report presented to the City of Doncaster Council’s cabinet in October estimated the total cost of reopening the airport at £193 million.
In response to the uncertainties, unions are organizing a protest labeled “save our airport” outside the airport premises, previously known as Robin Hood Airport, to emphasize their concerns. Meanwhile, Fly Doncaster, the airport operator, has initiated a search for potential on-site partners, which may include a fixed base operator catering to private jets, medical aircraft, and private pilots.
TUC Yorkshire Regional Secretary Dave Pike emphasized the importance of honoring the commitment to reopen the airport, citing the potential creation of numerous quality jobs and economic benefits for the region. The sentiment was echoed by GMB Organiser Sarah Barnes, who highlighted the significance of the airport for job creation. Additionally, Unite regional officer Chris Rawlinson stressed the critical role of the airport in driving job growth and securing the region’s future.
Efforts to seek comments from Doncaster Council by Mirror have been made regarding the situation.
