Apple introduced a new foldable phone named Duo, marking a significant change in its flagship product lineup. The Duo resembles a passport in size and shape, featuring rounded edges and the ability to open into a wide horizontal screen that can also be viewed vertically. When folded, a smaller single screen is visible on the front, making it Apple’s thinnest phone when opened. The starting price for the Duo is $2,999 globally, but in the U.S., it starts at $1,999, which translates to about $2,760 Canadian dollars. Pre-orders for the Duo will commence on October 17, with availability slated for October 23.
Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus, described the iPhone Duo as a groundbreaking innovation that revolutionizes the concept of foldable phones. Ternus highlighted the shortcomings of existing foldable devices, emphasizing that the Duo was designed to provide a seamless user experience akin to an iPad in a compact, pocket-sized form. The device boasts a custom hinge, dual displays with a consistent aspect ratio, and a durable titanium body.
During the unveiling event, Ternus, who recently took over as Apple’s CEO, showcased the latest advancements in the iPhone lineup, including the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max models. These new handsets, which do not fold, start at $1,749 and $1,899 respectively. Apple also introduced features aimed at addressing concerns related to AI-generated images and authenticity verification, such as the “Apple Reference Image” standard.
The iPhone 18 Pro will incorporate the new A20 Pro chip, enhancing the device’s capabilities for running advanced AI models directly on the device. Additionally, Apple announced the launch of updated AirPods starting at $179, featuring noise cancellation, and a premium version priced at $209 with added functionalities like wireless charging and on-stem volume control.
Furthermore, Apple unveiled the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, positioning them as significant updates with a focus on health-related features. It will be Ternus’s responsibility to persuade consumers about the value of investing in a high-priced foldable device like the Duo. Apple’s latest offerings aim to redefine user experiences and set new standards in the tech industry.
