Madonna, a legendary figure in pop music, has once again dominated the nominations for the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards. This marks her third time leading the nominations list, surpassing even Taylor Swift. The iconic artist has secured a total of 11 nominations for the ceremony next month, including nods for artist of the year and video of the year, all in recognition of her highly successful album, “Confessions II,” and its corresponding film.
In a fierce competition, Madonna outshined Taylor Swift, who holds the title of the most awarded solo artist in VMA history, with Swift receiving nine nominations for her album “The Life of a Showgirl” and the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia.” Following closely behind Swift are Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande, each receiving seven nominations.
This isn’t Madonna’s first time in the spotlight at the VMAs; she previously led the nominations in 1990 and 1998 during her “Vogue” and “Ray of Light” eras. However, she is best remembered for her groundbreaking performance at the inaugural 1984 ceremony, where she stunned audiences in a wedding dress and a “Boy Toy” belt buckle, while singing “Like a Virgin.” This performance is now considered a pivotal moment that pushed the boundaries of cable television.
Madonna’s nominations this year span various categories, including video of the year, artist of the year, and song and collaboration of the year for “Bring Your Love,” a track featuring her fellow nominee, Carpenter. The highly anticipated video of the year award will see Madonna’s “Confessions” competing against Swift’s “Ophelia,” Grande’s “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” Carpenter’s “Tears,” Bruno Mars’s “I Just Might,” and Gener8ion and Yung Lean’s “Storm.”
For this year’s VMAs, the public can participate in voting for 13 categories. The winners will be revealed during the live broadcast of the ceremony on September 27, airing on CBS, MTV, and streaming on Paramount+.
