Dolly Parton’s journey from humble beginnings to fame has not only inspired her music but also led to the creation of a theme park, a podcast, and now a musical headed to Broadway later this year. Titled “Dolly: A True Original Musical,” the show promises to narrate Dolly’s life story in her own words and the songs that have influenced her. In a video announcement, the 80-year-old singer assured that the musical would stay true to her experiences, emphasizing that it delves into her roots, struggles, joys, and personal growth.
The upcoming musical will feature a blend of new compositions crafted specifically for the production and some of Dolly’s iconic hits like “I Will Always Love You,” “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “9 to 5.” Scheduled to kick off performances in New York City on December 7 this year, the show is slated to run until November 21, 2027.
Parton expressed her excitement, labeling the Broadway production as a lifelong dream. With a music career spanning nearly seven decades, she boasts a repertoire of over 3,000 songs and over 100 million albums sold globally. Furthermore, she holds esteemed positions in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The musical made its debut in Nashville last summer at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, where tickets for the six-week run quickly sold out. Director Bartlett Sher noted the profound impact Dolly has had on audiences, with many sharing personal stories of how she has inspired and brought joy into their lives.
According to a statement, the show aims to present Dolly’s untold narrative authentically, revealing a side of her that goes beyond the glitz and glamour associated with her image. Tickets for the Broadway show will be available to the public starting Friday, July 10.
