Canadian Swimmers Shine at Pan Pacs: Ruck Wins Silver, McIntosh Faces Challenges

Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh had contrasting performances at the Pan Pacific championships in Irvine, Calif. Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m butterfly and later clinched bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, marking her fourth and fifth medals of the competition. Ruck, hailing from Kelowna, B.C., achieved a personal best time of 56.71 seconds in the 100m butterfly, trailing behind American Gretchen Walsh who finished first. Australian Alexandria Perkins claimed the bronze medal.

Expressing her satisfaction, Ruck highlighted the importance of rest and relaxation before races. McIntosh, on the other hand, faced disappointment after failing to qualify for the A final in the women’s 400m freestyle. Despite winning the B final, McIntosh took full responsibility for her misjudgment during the morning heats, expressing frustration with her performance.

In other events, McIntosh secured a silver in the women’s 200m freestyle and later captured gold in the 400m individual medley. The men’s side saw Canadians Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk secure silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke. Tierney, who also won gold in the men’s 100m backstroke, attributed his success to dedicated training.

Ruck continued her medal streak by guiding Canada to a bronze in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay. The U.S. women’s team claimed gold in the event. Meanwhile, the Canadian men’s 4x100m freestyle team narrowly missed a podium spot, finishing fourth. The U.S., Australia, and Japan secured the top three spots in the men’s relay event.
