U.S. President Donald Trump has once again issued a threat against Oman while Iran confirms collaboration with the Gulf Arab nation on a strategy to oversee shipping activities in the Strait of Hormuz. The reopening of this crucial waterway remains a significant demand from the United States.
Simultaneously, the 60-day negotiation period between the United States and Iran to secure a peace agreement is coming to a close, with no mention of an extension and both parties appearing as far apart as they were at the beginning.
Iran disclosed that they have made progress in discussions with Oman regarding a plan for ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, situated between the two countries. Efforts are underway to finalize the specifics for a joint statement. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei, speaking in Tehran, mentioned that there is an understanding in place about the transit route map.
Although precise details were not provided, earlier reports suggest that the agreement could involve reopening the strait, allowing ships to enter near Iran and exit near Oman without incurring any fees during an interim period. The U.S. has been pushing for a satisfactory accord on opening the strait before lifting its blockade on Iranian ports.
Following the military actions by Israel and the U.S. on February 28, Iran effectively closed the strait, through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s traded oil flows.
President Trump, in an interview with Fox News reporter Trey Yingst, indicated that the U.S. would take military action against Oman if it obstructs their plans. This is not the first time Trump has made such threats, as evidenced by his remarks during a previous cabinet meeting in May.
United Nations Secretary General António Guterres has urged both Iran and the U.S. to resume peace talks, underscoring the futility of a military resolution to the conflict and emphasizing the need to tone down aggressive rhetoric.
Houthi rebels in Yemen, backed by Iran, asserted responsibility for attacking a ship and four military boats in the Red Sea near Mokha. The rebels purportedly launched ballistic missiles at the vessels, causing them to capsize and catch fire. They claimed the targeted vessels belonged to Saudi Arabia, although this allegation remains unsubstantiated.
In a separate incident, drone attacks targeted two officials in northern Iraq, which were reportedly launched from the border with Iran. The regional counterterrorism service confirmed the attacks, one aimed at the office of Masrour Barzani, the prime minister of Iraq’s northern Kurdish region, and the other at the residence of a senior intelligence official. No casualties were reported, and the responsible party remains unidentified.
As tensions persist amidst the ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Iran, acts of aggression continue to unfold, with Iran and its proxies launching assaults on various targets, including U.S. military installations and diplomatic compounds. Additionally, the withdrawal of U.S. forces from the Kurdish region of Iraq is underway, in accordance with an agreed deadline to end American military presence in the country by September 30.
