The excruciating pain, which intensified in 2020, often left Dion struggling to walk on certain days, requiring high doses of Valium for relief. Stiff person syndrome is a progressive condition that worsens over time, affecting a minute portion of the population. Its symptoms, such as muscle rigidity and painful spasms triggered by stress or sudden movements, have no clear cause or approved treatment, although various therapies can help manage the disorder.
Prior to her diagnosis, Dion would conceal her discomfort from fans by attributing show cancellations to minor issues like coughs or sinus infections. Feeling the weight of her undisclosed ailment, she expressed the guilt of potentially deceiving her loyal supporters who funded her treatment through ticket sales and record purchases.
Following her diagnosis, Dion canceled all remaining shows but is now preparing for a comeback, scheduled for September.
