Two Canadian researchers have been recognized in a global image competition showcasing ecological research. The 2026 joint BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition honored 11 photos from researchers worldwide at different career stages. The images featured animals in their natural habitats, scientists and students conducting ecological research, and various natural scenes.
Liam Brennan, a master’s student and photographer at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), won the competition’s research in action category with his photo titled “Intertidal education.” Meanwhile, Allen (Haolun) Tian, a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with Queen’s University, Hangzhou Normal University, and Zhejiang University in China, secured the “protecting our planet” category with his image named “A bridge between past and present.”
For researchers, images serve as a tool to document their work and provide a glimpse into the world of science. Brennan highlighted the importance of such images in building public trust in environmental education and ecological research.
Brennan captured the winning photo “Intertidal education” while overseeing undergraduate students monitoring coastal fish species in St. Andrews, N.B. The image depicted the students engaged in a fish monitoring project at night, with the full moon adding an artistic touch to the scene. Despite the challenges posed by the high tides in the Bay of Fundy, Brennan successfully captured the essence of curiosity on the students’ faces.
Tian’s winning image, “A bridge between past and present,” showcased the Long Sault Parkway through a composition of 33 drone photos, providing a comprehensive view of the area. He emphasized the importance of such images in highlighting ecosystems and the impact of conservation efforts.
The competition also recognized other photographers for their outstanding work, with each image telling a unique story related to ecological research and conservation efforts. The winning images not only celebrate the beauty of nature but also raise awareness about the importance of preserving our planet’s ecosystems.
